Strategic Advice for Corporate Energy Buyers in Q3-2026

  • Evaluate Flexible Purchasing Over Fixed-Rate Lock-ins: Because prices are heavily driven by a geopolitical risk premium rather than a structural shortage of physical gas assets, a sudden breakthrough or ceasefire in the Middle East could trigger a rapid market correction downward. Locking into a 12-to-24-month fixed contract at the peak of Q3 risk premiums could expose a business to uncompetitive overheads if the market deflates.
  • Utilise the Summer-Ahead/Summer 2027 Reference Points: Businesses executing flexible purchasing should use quieter, high-renewables periods in Q3 to layer in forward positions for the less demand-intensive Summer 2027 blocks, which are currently showing a smoother forward curve than the highly pressured Winter 2026/27 blocks.
  • Audit KVA / Maximum Import Capacity (MIC): With MIC and capacity charges trending upwards, commercial operations should review their agreed capacity levels with their Distribution Network Operator. Over-specifying capacity will result in paying unnecessary premium rates on the non-commodity portion of the bill.
