Implement waste segregation

Utilise waste-to-energy solutions

Businesses can reduce landfill waste by opting for waste-to-energy solutions, where non-recyclable waste is incinerated to produce energy. This can reduce disposal costs and contributes to energy production, playing a part in boosting sustainability efforts.

2025 Waste Compliance Support

From March 2025, UK businesses must comply with new food waste legislation, separating food from general waste to increase recycling rates and benefit the environment. This law mandates that all businesses store food waste separately and engage licensed carriers for its disposal, aiming to significantly reduce landfill waste.

Advantage Utilities offers tailored services to help businesses adjust seamlessly to these changes. We provide expert waste management support, ensuring businesses meet legal requirements efficiently. Our services include waste assessment, provision of appropriate bins, and organised waste collection schedules, all designed to streamline your operations and enhance your sustainability efforts.

How To Stay Compliant With Simpler Waste Recycling 2025

From March 31, 2025, new Simpler Recycling regulations will come into effect, requiring businesses to handle waste more efficiently. Here’s what you need to do to stay compliant:

Sort waste correctly – Ensure you have the right bins to separate different waste streams for proper recycling.

Prevent contamination – Keep waste streams clean by avoiding cross-contamination. For example, food waste or recyclables in a general waste bin can disrupt the recycling process.

Store waste securely – Keep materials in a designated area until collection to maintain compliance and efficiency.

Use a registered waste provider – Work with an accredited waste carrier, to ensure your waste is collected and recycled responsibly.

By following these steps, your business can stay compliant, cut costs, and improve sustainability.

UK Food Waste Legislation 2025

Why Is This Law Changing?

The UK government aims to eliminate food waste sent to landfill by 2030. Currently, over 9.5 million tonnes of food waste are discarded annually, much of which ends up in landfills, contributing to greenhouse gas emissions. The new regulations encourage food waste to be processed through more sustainable methods like anaerobic digestion, which turns waste into biofuel and natural fertilizers, supporting a circular economy.

Who Needs to Comply with the New Food Waste Regulations?

All non-domestic premises in England that generate any food waste weekly are required to comply with the new regulations. This includes businesses, schools, hospitals, care homes, and more, with specific relevance for food-related industries such as restaurants and bakeries.

While micro businesses with fewer than ten full-time employees (until March 2027) are exempt and may continue using general waste bins, it is advisable for all companies to separate food waste.
