Initiating an energy audit is the quickest and most effective route to making sure your business is meeting the necessary regulatory requirements.
The steps to completing an energy audit include:
Appointing an Assessor
Reporting on all energy use including electricity, gas, fleet
Conducting an energy assessment to identify opportunities to increase efficiency
Presenting findings to and achieve sign-off by a director listed on Companies House
Submitting a notification of compliance to the Environment Agency
Maintaining an evidence pack
Providing an overview of energy consumption and associated patterns, energy audits enable businesses to reduce their usage and costs whilst helping to tackle climate change and lead the UK towards a higher level of energy security.
The Energy Savings Opportunity Scheme (ESOS) is a mandatory energy assessment scheme for large organisations based in the UK. ESOS is designed to give organisations the opportunity to conduct an in-depth review of their energy use in order to identify ways to improve energy efficiency.
ESOS requires organisations that meet the qualification criteria to audit and report on at least 90% of their energy usage to The Environment Agency every 4 years. ESOS has 4 phases (sometimes called stages) and deadlines for submission.
The ESOS Regulations have been under consultation and the government response detailing changes for Phase 3 and Phase 4 of the scheme was released in August 2022.
For large businesses, ESOS mandates energy audits for companies with 250 or more employees or companies with an annual turnover exceeding £44 million and an annual balance sheet total of over £38 million. However, this criteria could change and so getting ahead by conducting comprehensive energy audits could save your business time in the long run.
Yes, audits are tailored to the needs of your business and so range from highly targeted site audits to comprehensive audits that cover most or all business operations.

A business energy audit spans a number of actions, including compliance-based management, calculating the total energy consumption profile of your organisation and identifying areas of significant energy consumption. In accordance with ESOS requirements, business energy audits can also involve compiling a full evidence pack for you to demonstrate compliance or reporting compliance to the Environment Agency (EA).
Business energy audits can be carried out by accredited industry professionals with the knowledge and expertise on energy efficiency and energy management practices. With over 20 years experience in commercial energy, Advantage Utilities is well-placed to offer bespoke advice to businesses on their business energy audits.
An energy audit can provide information on opportunities for potential energy savings, carbon footprint reduction, and compliance checks. The audit may also suggest renewable energy options and long-term strategies for reducing energy costs while improving sustainability and operational efficiency.
The cost of an energy audit depends on the size of the site and the scope of work involved. For bespoke information on costs, reach out to the Advantage Utilities team who would be glad to assist you.
The Energy Savings Opportunity Scheme (ESOS) is a mandatory energy assessment and energy-saving identification programme for large organisations in the UK. Introduced by the UK government to comply with the EU Energy Efficiency Directive, ESOS helps businesses identify cost-effective energy efficiency measures that reduce energy consumption and carbon emissions.
ESOS applies to large undertakings and their corporate groups in the UK. Organisations qualify if they:
- Employ 250 or more people, or
- Have an annual turnover exceeding £44 million and a balance sheet exceeding £38 million.
The scheme operates in phases. Non-compliance can lead to significant fines, so it’s vital to act now to ensure your organisation meets its obligations.
At Advantage Utilities, we offer a comprehensive suite of services to guide you through the ESOS compliance process. Our team of experts has extensive experience in energy assessments and implementing energy-saving measures. Here’s how we can support your organisation:
